Making Smoothies with Avocados

Avocados are an oval shaped tree fruit, sometimes called the "alligator pear." They have thick, pebbly outer skin, which contains smooth, creamy flesh, and a large seed. The only edible part of the avocado is it's flesh, which tastes mild, buttery, and slightly nutty in flavor. The top producing country of avocados in the world is Mexico, which is the tree fruit's native country.

Fun Facts

  • Avocados get their creamy texture from the amount of fat they contain (mostly the heart-healthy monounsaturated fats).
  • Avocados are unique in that they only ripen once they are off the tree. Note: Do not leave avocados too long on the tree or their oils inside will turn rancid and they will fall to the ground.
  • Hass avocados are the world's most popular variety of avocado eaten today.

Avocados are definitely one of our favorite ingredients to put in our smoothies. The hardest part is finding a ripe one or at least knowing when to use it at the right time. We'll sometimes bring home the perfect avocado only to find it's way past it's due date or it's still not ripe.

It's also one of the only fruits that contain all of the healthy nutrients you need. I suppose you could live off of a pure avocado and water diet, but... we're not saying you should do that.

If you're looking for an extra creamy texture to your smoothies, give it a go!
