Matcha powder is shade-grown green tea leaves that are finely milled into a powder. It's made from the same tea leaf that's used to make gyokuro tea.
What's most interesting about matcha powder is you're consuming the entire leaf instead of steeping the leaf and throwing it away when you're done, so with that comes more nutrition and anti-oxidants.
You'll can see matcha popping up in ice cream, cakes, cupcakes, sushi, starbucks drinks, and most importantly... smoothies.
It's traditionally made by putting a teaspoon or two in a small bowl of hot water, and whisked with a specific matcha whisk (also known as a chasen) until your hand gets cramped, but you don't need to do any of that when using it in a smoothie. You can simply add the powder as an ingredient to your smoothies.
It's a bit bitter and earthy by itself, but it has an awesome, unique taste that you can only describe as "some kind of...green...tea".
