Making Smoothies with Spinach

Spinach is a bright green tender, leafy vegetable. The flowering plant grows like lettuce, but is a relative to beets and swiss chard. It's flavor is delicate, sweet, and slightly bitter. The three most basic types of spinach include flat-leaf, savoy, and semi-savoy spinach. Savoy spinach is what is most commonly found in the grocery store, along with baby spinach, which is a member of the flat-leaf group.

Blending Tip

When blending spinach, it works best to blend just the spinach and liquid together first for about 30 seconds or so before putting the rest of the ingredients in. It makes a nice green smoothie base that ensures you don't have any spinach chunks sneaking up anywhere.

Spinach really is one of our favorite ways to make any smoothie into a green smoothie. It's a nice, light flavor and texture, so it pairs very well with most flavors. If you're someone who gags at the sight of a green smoothie, but you really want to like it, try spinach first. It's such a great "beginner" leafy green.
